AP4. AUTOGRAPH BOOK SIGNED BY THE BEATLES DURING THE ROY ORBISON UK
TOUR ....
WITH RARE McCARTNEY
HANDWRITTEN LYRIC LINE!
On Saturday, May 18, 1963, The Beatles embarked on their third nationwide tour
of Britain, supporting American singer-songwriter and rock pioneer Roy Orbison.
Though Orbison began the tour as headliner, audience demand quickly necessitated
a change in billing and The Beatles assumed the top spot. By the time the tour
ended on June 9, 1963, the band had played twenty dates with Orbison, who The
Beatles idolized immensely.
On the sixth night of the tour — May 23, 1963 — they played the Odeon Cinema on
Angel Row in Nottingham. A page from this autograph book, still intact, was
fully signed by all four Beatles that evening. While they signed numerous
autograph books for fans in 1963, few have exhibited the kind of content
showcased here.
Paul McCartney has written “Beatles” at the top, followed by the
inscription: “To Sandra, with love, from me to you ... Paul McCartney XXX.”
Beneath his signature, he has added the word “BASS” as a reminder of his
role in this up-and-coming group. George has signed “George Harrison XXX”,
adding the words “Lean Guitar XXX”, writing “Lean” instead of “Lead”
perhaps as a word play on his physical stature. John has written “John Lennon
(a Friend) XXX” and Ringo has signed “Ringo Starr XXX”.
McCartney’s inscription “with love, from me to you” was an obvious
reference to the McCartney-Lennon penned hit “From Me To You” which had been
released as a Parlophone single in England just six weeks earlier, on April 11,
1963. “From Me To You” was the first Beatles song to reach number one in Britain
and it would be the first of eleven consecutive British number one singles by
the group.
Beatles handwritten inscriptions that borrow lyric lines from their songs are
very rare indeed and any additional writing (such as Paul and George noting the
instruments they played or John’s “heartwarming” addendum) add enormously to the
appeal and value of a set. Considering the astronomical prices Beatles
handwritten song manuscripts are fetching at auction, this set enables you to
acquire a McCartney handwritten lyric line at a small fraction of the price of a
full lyric page.
The signed page, which is pink in color, measures 4 ¼” x 4”. All four have
signed this page in various ballpoint pens. Paul has used a dark blue ink,
George and Ringo have used a lighter blue ink, while John has signed in black
ink.
Part of the beauty of this autograph book is that it remains just as it has been
for the past 45 years - completely intact and, consequently, a very special
complete memento of a fan’s quest to secure the signatures of her idols. There
are no other notable autographs in the book.
This is a rare opportunity to secure a truly special Beatles autograph set —and
the closest most collectors will ever get to possessing handwritten song lyrics.
Signed album pages just don’t get any better than this…..$15,000
AP2. A Set Of Beatles Autographs On Two Items
This complete set of Beatles autographs consists of two items, the first being a green colored autograph album page which measures 5 ¾” x 4 ½”. This page has been beautifully signed by John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison in blue ballpoint pen. These signatures date from July/August of 1963, and they are great examples from the period. The second signed item is an October 1962 issue Parlophone Records promo card which has been signed on the reverse by Paul McCartney in blue ballpoint. Additionally, he has added “(Beatles)” and “XXX” following his signature, which dates from early 1963. These two items have been matted with a “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” LP cover and framed to 17” x 21”. This is an exceptional set on two items nicely presented and ready to hang and display…..$6,500.
AP5. A Green Colored
Autograph Album Page Signed By The Beatles In Late 1962
Here is a light green colored autograph album page which was signed by all four members of The Beatles within months of Ringo Starr joining the band in August of 1962. All four have autographed this page very nicely, with John Lennon and George Harrison signing in blue ballpoint. George has added “XX” following his signature, indicating that this page was signed for a female fan. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr have signed in green ballpoint pen, with Paul adding “THE BEATLES” in capital letters, a rare form, as he almost always used script to write the name of the band when he did so. This adds a nice touch, as it is always desirable to have a band member write “Beatles” or “The Beatles” when signing an item. Ringo has added “Love” before and ”XXX” after his signature. The signatures on this page date from November/December of 1962, and are excellent examples from this early period, when The Beatles were still relatively unknown throughout most of Great Britain. The page measures 5 ¾” x 4” and is in very good condition, having been well kept over the years…..$9,000
Item AP3. A Set Of Beatles Autographs On Two Pages
This complete set of Beatles signatures is contained on two pages, the first of which is a blue/green colored sheet of lined notepaper which measures 3 ¾” x 6”. John Lennon and George Harrison have signed this page beautifully in blue ballpoint pen. The second page measures 4 ½” x 4”, is light green in color, and has been signed by Paul McCartney in blue ballpoint pen, while Ringo Starr has used a black ballpoint. Paul has written “Beatles” above his signature, which is very desirable and adds a nice touch. Both pages, which are unmatted, were signed in late 1963. All four signatures are excellent examples from this period just before The Beatles arrived here for their first historic U.S. visit. Beautifully presented, it is professionally framed with a reproduction of the classic Beatles 'Lybro' Jeans advertisement and ready for display…..$6,500
